It was also one of the few cities in our nation that were planned and developed specifically to function as a state capital. A full-time fire company/service was established in 1821. And yet, in 1831 the state Capitol nearly burned to the ground and has to be reconstructed.  When the stock market crashed in 1929 six banks in the city closed  and the city had to weather financial hardships. Today it is a vibrant and thriving community which has appeared on many “top ten” lists since 2000.
