Chapel Hill is a medium-sized town primarily located in Orange County, but extends into portions of Durham and Chatham counties. It has approximately 18 neighborhoods and is the 16th largest community in the state. Chapel Hill is one of the corners of the Research Triangle and a central city of the Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a wealthy community compared to both state and national economic standard and has a large percentage of scientist, artists and computer workers. Over 74% of all adults in Chapel Hill have four-year degrees or higher, which is approximately three times the national average. It is highly ethnically and racially diverse. Nearly 17% of all residents are foreign born. English is the primary language, followed by Spanish, Chinese and Korean. Public transportation is available and many residents use it for their daily commutes. Buses are the most popular form, due in part to the fact that they do not charge bus fares in Chapel Hill.

The town spans 21.3 square miles. It is a white-collar community where over 95% of the workforce is white-collar. It is a thriving college town and home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The presence of the university means the town is quieter in the summer, but the university has a stabilizing effect on the local economy and provides many area jobs. In 2010, the population was 57,233 and the population density was 2,687 people per square mile. In 2013, the estimated median household income was $65,004 and the per capita income was $36,216. In the same year, the estimated median home or condo value was $365,236, the mean price on all housing units was $418,085 and the median gross rent was $989.

The town is named after New Hope Chapel, which once stood on a hill at a crossroads of primary local roads. The Chapel was built in approximately 1752. The community was founded in 1793, when town lots were divided and auctioned off. This is the same year that construction began on the first building of the university. Two years later, the first residents moved into permanent homes in the budding community. The history of the town and the university are forever linked, in fact the town was created to serve the institution of higher learning. The original town map, dating from 1798, marked off thirty lots wrapping around the grounds of the campus. These lots were auctioned off to the highest bidder for development. The town grew up around the campus and was chartered in 1851, by 1859 it covered 820 acres and was roughly rectangular in shape. The town celebrated its official bicentennial in 1993.
