Holly Springs is a medium-sized town in Wake County, North Carolina. The town has around six neighborhoods and is the 36th largest community in the state of North Carolina. It is located approximately 30 minutes away is the big city of Raleigh. In 2007, according to CNNMoney.com, Holly Springs was ranked the 22nd best small town in the United States. Nearly 55% of adults in Holly Springs have four-year degrees or higher, which is more than twice the national average. It is a relatively wealthy community compared to state and national economic standards. It is a diverse community both in terms of race and ethnicity. English is the primary language followed by Spanish and various other languages. New population growth as well as many recently built and new homes attest to the fact that Holly Springs is growing and thriving.

Before settlers arrived, people of the indigenous Tuscarora tribes used the lands in the area as hunting grounds. After the arrival of settlers, the natural springs made the area a favorite stopping point for travelers and soon a community grew up around the springs. By 1800, the settlement was a village complete with a general store, church and Masonic lodge. In 1854, in the lodge the Holly Springs Academy opened in to prepare young men to attend Wake Forest College. Two years later the ground floor of the lodge was allocated as a space to educate the local girls. During the Civil War many local men and boys were off to war and the school was closed. The war was devastating to the local economy which did not begin to recover until 1875 when George Alford moved his mercantile business in. The town was officially established in 1877. WWI and WWII also wreaked havoc with the town’s economy and it remained sluggish until the 1980s when the town and it’s economy began to experience growth again. The 1990s brought a boom with the population rising from a mere 900 in 1992 to 6000 in 1998. Then, from 2000 to 2010 the population more than doubled bring it to the thriving community we know today.

The town spans 15.1 square miles and is decidedly white-collar, over 90% of the workforce hold white-collar positions. More than 9% of the workforce work from home via telecommuting, freelance work and home-based businesses. In 2010, the population was 24,661 and the population density was 1,633.18 people per square mile. In the same year, the median household income was $85,000, the median family income was $92,539 and the per capita income was $34,527. By 2013, the median household income was $88,495 and the per capita income was 34,276. Also, in 2013, the mean price on all housing in the town was $273,171 and the median gross rent was $1,136.

Public education is primarily provided by the schools of the Wake County School District. Schools in Holly Springs include, Holly Springs Elementary, Holly Ridge Middle School, Middle Creek High School and others. It is also home to the New School Montessori Center private school.
