Durham, North Carolina is a large city that spans into three counties, Wake, Orange and Durham counties. The bulk of the city lies in Durham County and it serves as the county seat. It has approximately sixty neighborhoods and is the fifth largest community in the state. Durham is a principal city of the Raleigh-Durham Chapel Hill combined statistical area and one of the three corners of the Research Triangle area. It is a wealthy community compared to state economic standards and upper-middle class compared to federal standards. Over 47% of adults in Durham have four-year degrees or higher, which is more than twice the national average. It is an extremely diverse city in terms of both race and ethnicity. English is the primary language followed by Spanish. Durham is the long time home of Duke University and North Carolina Central University and in 2013, Forbes ranked Durham #10 on their “Best Places for Business and Careers.” Private vehicles and carpooling are the most popular for daily commutes, but public transportation is available. Triangle transit provides regional and commuter bus services and Amtrak has a train station that operates daily in Durham.

Previous to the arrival of European settlers the area was inhabited by the indigenous Eno and Occoneechi tribes. The first English explorer to the area was John Lawson in 1701. The area was settled in the mid-1700s primarily by Scottish, Irish and English settlers. During the Antebellum era large plantations dotted the area and agriculture was the main industry. The first train station was built on land owned by Bartlett S. Durham. A community around the station grew slowly until after the Civil War when the tobacco industry brought on an era of fast growth. The town was incorporated in April of 1869 and named in honor of Durham. The city spans 108.3 square miles and it is a decidedly white-collar community with over 84% of the workforce holding/working white collar positions. In 2010, the median household income in Durham was $47,394, the median family income was 60,157 and the per capita income was $27,156. By 2013, the estimated median household income was $50,522 and the estimated per capita income was $30,808 showing a definite rise in local economics. In the same year the mean price on all housing units in the city was $206,342 and the median gross rent was $877. The 2014 estimated population of Durham was 251,893 and the estimated population density was 2,346 people per square mile. The top five employers in the city are Duke University/Duke University Health System, IBM, Durham Public Schools, GlaxoSmithKline and Blue Cross & Blue Shield.

Public education is primarily provided by the Durham Public School System. It is a large district with more than fifty schools and a student body of more than 33,000 children. Durham has a variety of parks with countless amenities and hosts several cultural events during the year like the Durham Blues Festival and the American Dance Festival.
